What All New Teachers Know

Are we dreaming? For so many reasons we can characterize our new normal way of living as a nightmare.

I recently had a conversation with someone who has only left their home 39 times in the last 295 days. They shared they spent their holidays alone. That absolutely breaks my heart. And if that wasn’t enough, we all must try to make sense of what is happening in our country. The impact of the pandemic is awful and deserves the attention it is receiving to ensure everyone remains educated and armed with the information and knowledge to do their part in making educated decisions to combat this awful virus.

Are we though?

Are we missing the daily headlines and new reports from the experts because we are doing our best to make sense of the violence that occurred in our nation’s capital last week? It goes without saying, that was “historic”. But I find myself wondering, by focusing on that historic event we are missing another historic event. It makes me think about the advice I was given as a new teacher, don’t focus your attention on the student that is seeking your attention with their negative/undesirable behavior… you should focus on the desirable behavior. Specifically, children naturally want your attention and will do whatever it takes to get “it”; so be careful with the attention you give. You may wonder why am I reflecting on “baby teacher 101 advice” well, in a nutshell… I would like some attention given to the history in the making. For the first time in our country’s history, we will have a woman Vice President. I ask everyone to pause, reflect on what that means and what it will mean for young girls (and boys). Regardless of your thoughts and feelings about Ms. Harris, I argue we are still experiencing an historic event. Can we turn our attention to the positive, can we now pay attention to the behavior we want instead of what we don’t want?
